This is an example of a wine that was held for extra barrel aged before bottling. Most traditional wineries do something similar with at least one of their wines. This Merlot was aged for 2.25 years before bottling. Now, fair warning- super aged wines are not everyone's cup of tea. Long ageing of wine reduces fruit character, softens the wine, and turns it a lighter brick red color. It trades fruity jam for smoother and softer tannins, and earthy umami notes.
